The Secret of Monkey Island is one of the most influential games of my life. I think you captured the spirit of reading those manuals well.

nice! I was too young at the time, but I heard about the anti-piracy wheel, that was cool!
They used to do tons of stuff like that because floppies were so easy to copy, very inventive!
